The life of an A-list powerhouse stylist doesn’t allow for much downtime, so when the pandemic hit and Kate Young had a little more on her hands, she made the most of it.

“I’ve been using Monica Vinader’s brand for a while and we had talked about doing a collaboration. When COVID arrived and everything was suspended, Monica and I tried to understand. Someone suggested we get together on Zoom, so one day we did and had the best time during the dark days,” says Young, who maintains a client list that includes Margot Robbie, Dakota Johnson, Selena Gomez, Michelle Williams, among others. “We talked about jewelry for an hour and planned to talk more about it. Then the collaboration grew out of that.

The Monica Vinader x Kate Young collection debuts today and is said to be “born out of a love of design, modernity and craftsmanship”. The range includes rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces in bold green onyx, black onyx and lemon quartz set in clean, sculptural pieces. It’s also affordable, with prices ranging from $115 to $850.

Young said she appreciates Vinader’s sustainability practices and how it uses the most “incredible” stones. Vinader, born in San Sebastian, Spain, has boutiques in London, Hong Kong, New York and Singapore with a base and design team in Norfolk, England.

“All the metals she uses are 100% recycled and she goes to the limit to ensure all stones are mined responsibly,” Young shared of the designer’s eco-friendly methods, further praising Vinader. for winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable. Development for the brand’s commitment to the environment and ethical design.

Young’s favorite pieces, shown below, include a black onyx bangle bracelet and lemon quartz cocktail earrings. “I want to wear it all the time,” Young said of the bracelet. “The way we wanted it to look was technically difficult to achieve. I didn’t think we were going to pull it off. It’s a continuous gold circle with a smooth onyx stone cut straight into the gold. There’s no visible adjustment and it’s set so it won’t break. It’s really complicated. When you know the history of how something was made and all the different iterations it went through, that makes it really valuable.

She also loves that the designs are modeled by her close friends, clothing designer Carlie Cushnie and chef and artist Laila Gohar. “I’m really happy with the footage and how it turned out,” said Young, who also has a collaboration with eyewear brand Tura. “They look good in the countryside and I’m delighted with them.”

Always a stylist, Young also explained that jewelry like this offers an easy solution to dressing up an ensemble for Zoom meetings. “[During COVID] I started using more prominent everyday jewelry than I had in the past — bigger hoops, stronger necklaces, and more prominent jewelry,” she explained. “We continue to do Zoom calls and I don’t think it will ever stop because it’s very convenient for bringing a group of people together to chat. A big earring, a necklace or an amazing coin [worn] with a simple t-shirt can make you look like you’ve dressed up.
